[News] BTS Jimin's "Lie" is the "Best Idol Sampling Song"

BTS Jimin's "Lie" was voted as the "Best Idol Sampling Song."

Global star fan application StarPlay conducted the poll themed "Fantastic Combination! Best Idol Sampling Song" for two weeks from November 29 to December 13.

Recently, the integration of popular music and classical masterpieces has emerged as a new trend. K-pop music reinterpreted with a familiar yet fresh sensibility using "sampling," a music technique that borrows a specific theme of the original song, is captivating global fans.

In the poll "Fantastic Combination! The Best Idol Sampling Song" which listed songs with sampling that create new harmony with familiar melodies and the present day's colorful charms, "Lie" by K-pop representative artist BTS Jimin received an overwhelming 79.04% of votes.

"Lie" is a solo song by Jimin from BTS's second full-length album WINGS, which was released in October 2016.

"Lie," where Jimin participated in the writing and composition, sampled "Danse Espagnole" from Manuel de Falla's opera La Vida Breve.

"Lie" is regarded as a charming and artistic song that perfectly harmonizes the magnificent classical melody of the original song, the charming Spanish guitar sound, and the strong appeal of Jimin's unique voice.

In particular, Jimin showed his amazing ability at expression, capturing deep and profound emotions, as well as his wide range, gracefully crossing major and minor, thus, further enhancing the perfection of the song and proving he is a world-class vocalist.

"Lie" is also famous for its high-level, artistic performances. You cannot look away even for a moment because of the sophisticated performance that is like a work of art that combines popping and contemporary (lyrical) dance.

"Lie," which was selected as one of the "Eight Unforgettable Dance Performances by K-pop Stars" by Rolling Stone India due to Jimin's high-quality dance techniques and dramatic expression of beauty and pain, is regarded as a legendary song and a masterpiece.

'The choreography for “Lie” blends Jimin’s two greatest strengths, contemporary and popping, to create a hybrid that suits him immensely. With the song being a deeply personal one he wrote himself, the piece is full of pain and sadness and he conveys each of these emotions clearly through his facial expressions–despite being blindfolded for a large portion of the track. It’s a performance from BTS’ Wings era that’s pretty impossible to forget.'

Six years since its release, "Lie" continues to receive a lot of love. It recorded nearly 200 million streams on the global music platform Spotify, and has earned over 110 million on-demand streams in the US as of November 13—demonstrating its long-term popularity.

In addition, it has sold over 500,000 units in US back in February, qualifying it for RIAA Gold Certification. Currently, Jimin has three solo songs that have surpassed 500,000 units of sales in the US.

Meanwhile, the other songs on StarPlay's poll are Blackpink's "Shut Down" at No. 2, followed by DKZ’s "BlockBuster" and Gfriends's "Summer Rain".
