Melon, owned by Kakao M, is South Korea’s largest music streaming platform. It is available exclusively in South Korea and currently has over 28 million users. MelOn has several different subscription packages.

Only accounts with a Korean phone number are classified as “verified accounts.” If you download the application outside of Korea you will have an “unverified account.” Unverified accounts cannot buy streaming passes or rank the songs but can still like the track, watch the 1-minute preview, and leave comments.

Importance of Streaming on Melon

Streaming on Melon is important for Korean music charts, including the Gaon Digital Chart. Data from Melon is also accounted for in songs' scores for awards in music shows such as SBS Inkigayo, Show! Music Core, KBS Music Bank, Show Champion, and yearend music festival awards, such as the Melon Music Awards, Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA), Golden Disc Awards.

These award shows contribute to the recognition of an artist and their works among the general public.

How to Sign Up

1. Open the Melon app.
2. On the homepage that appears, tap the three-line icon on the top left to open menu.
2. Tap the screw icon on the top right to open account settings.
3. Tap "로그인" to log in
4. Sign up using your KakaoTalk account.

How to Interact with Content on Melon

1. Search for the track.
- Tap the magnifying class on the homepage.
- Type in the track's title on the search bar.
2. Tap the play button of the track. You can listen to a 1-minute preview if your account is unverified. 
3. Tap three-dot icon to open the track's menu.
4. To like the track, press the heart icon.
5. Rate and write comments.
- Tap "앨범정보" to go to the song information.
- Tap "댓글" (Comments). If you have a verified account, you can give the song a rating.
- Tap "글쓰기" (Write) to write a comment. 
- Write your comment. Don't leave it black or use emojis. Tap "등록" to post.
- Like other people’s comments.
6. Like videos.
-  Tap BTS/Jimin's (to be announced) profile picture. 
- Tap the star on their profile.
- Tap "비디오" to go to the profile's videos.
- If you have an Unverified Account, you can only watch previews of the video.
- Give the video a heart/like

Tips and Reminders

1. A 1-minute preview does not count as steam. However, a new user is accounted for as a new unique listener.
2. While on streaming mode only, listen to the whole song without interruptions, such as skipping some parts.
3. The data will be updated every hour by counting the number of unique listeners based on the previous 24 hours.
